We produced a dry fish package, we called Juku Kalotoro. We start to running this business as a alternative income for a fishermen’s wives. We using a traditional tools and limited fishermen because we also maintain the conservation of coral reef ecosystem. We did not use the modern tools to catch the fish or even illegal fishing. Beside that, we bought the fish from others with the good price to keep produce dry fish.. Our business concept is that taking into account the Conservation Business Quality of the product, which means the fish caught and the size of fish caught, as well as its processing. Our business is team work base. Each group there is around 10 fishermen and 10 fishermen’s wife. We called them as a partner business. To anticipate the competitors who will do the imitation our model business, we anticipate with the management of distribution channels. We do agree, our business model with eempowerment-based business is easily replicable and provide a positive impact for the community. So we have to collaborated with several outlets and hotels are registered so that when the product quality complaints, will facilitate the tracking process. Also we put a hotline customer number in each package for more information, complain or suggestions. For patent right for the brand Juku Kalotor is the most important things in our product. And the buttom line is we work with the concept community development, fair trade, with the sustainable goals. So we sure that, is not easy to imitate our business. Profit is important, continuity profit is more valuable to gain. We don’t want to be one hit wonder, but establish and growing as well together so much better.
Enterprise Impact on Sustainable Development
Our business concept is Conservation Business, so we keep the quality product with the standard life cycle of fish, squid or other sea fish. Our area nowadays around Selayar Island. In the future, our next branch are Latondu island, Rajuni island and Kahu island, so our business more productively. Our campaign to to preserve coral reef will be boosted. Our business concept is every product that we sell was given a sticker that 20 % of our profits will be donated to conservation of mangrove forests. Our dry fish trade mark are less salt, fish meat , hygienic, environmentally friendly and empowering community members for woman or fishermen’s wife. We encourage continual basis how the group can execute a commitment not to destroy the natural ways and coached how to cultivate our existing natural resources creatively and efficient. We educate community member not only to increase they income, but, automatically we coach them about the environment, healthy food, family planning, finance literacy in simple way and quality of life. Furthermore, we already achieve those are: 1. Juku Kalotoro well known as a good souvenir in Selayar, South Sulawesi since 2012 2. International market, we have buyer partner from Canada, Singapore, Malaysia 3. Average sales cycle less than a week every 50-70 kg production 4. High demand only from 3 (three) islands supply only.
Sustainability and Future Plans
In general, there are two sources of income margins in this business: 1. Purchases of raw materials from the fishing 2. Sale of products that have been packed. With the purchase of raw material (salted fish) directly from fishermen we could save Rp 10,000 – Rp 15,000 ($1 – $1.5) per kilogram compared to buying fish that has been entered in the fish market. Given the uniqueness of our product and the target market will obviously facilitate the economic turnaround. The next, there are 3 (three) main strategies for future business development as well as answering the challenges : a. Provide raw material easier. b. Increased scale of production c. Maintain man power, finance literacy and quality control to produced Juku Kalotoro as trade mark souvenirs from Indonesia. In the next 3-5 years, our fishermen will be well trained for preservation of ecosystems, coral reef protector as a fish habitat. On the second year we will had 42 center of production (42 islands) and will be replicate in each of the other islands could be in Thousand islands Jakarta, Borneo , Sumatra , Java , Maluku and Papua. To increased production level and ensure quality control will involve approximately 30 professional employees, 300 fisherman and their wife, who supply the raw materials. The good condition between supply and demand will be balance with the zero mistaken. We will start to use cardboard for packaging, environmentally friendly.Juku Kalotoro will be our nation trade mark souvenir from Indonesia, and it make the public will be aware that the importance of protecting coral reefs as fish habitat and every customer is involved in the preservation of ecosystems. The harmony between economic improvement of coastal communities and the marine environment safety will be proven.
